There’s nothing like a fresh, cute, low-maintenance set of knotless braids, twists or cornrows. Protective styles are extremely favorable within the natural hair community, whether you’re the in-and-out jumbo size queen, the triangle parts lover, or the take me back to the 90s chic bob fan.Â
We know the driving force behind these popular styles is their convenience. And protective styles are a great short-term investment for any lifestyle. They also showcase a stylist’s creativity and a client’s versatility. Throw your braids in a bun. Half up, half down split-decision is always a vibe. High ponytails, french braids or even space buns can accentuate any outfit for any occasion or temperature.Â
But only if you maintain them properly. Although installing protective styles may be a one-day thing, maintenance or lack thereof throughout the length of wear can grow or damage your natural hair. So, how do you make sure your scalp and natural tresses are protected when rocking extensions? Here are a few tips to keep in mind before your next appointment.
Keep your scalp moisturized: Use leave-in conditioner sprays or hair oils to retain moisture. This can be done a few times a week for healthy results and growth.Â
Shampoo your hair:Â Many shy away from cleansing their scalp while wearing braids or twists. Yes, you want to keep your edges looking fresh, minus the frizzle, and you want the style to last. However, going weeks or months without washing your braids or twists can be damaging down the road. Shampoo your hair with products suitable for extensions and use a method that works for you.
Don’t overextend your style’s welcome: Leaving the house costs money. Breathing costs money. Everything costs money, and getting your coins' worth out of any protective style is your priority. Don’t risk your hair’s health by leaving extensions in beyond six weeks. The longer you wear styles, the more likely you are to experience breakage or even hair loss.
Consider using human hair: Protective styles are commonly installed using synthetic hair. It’s wallet-friendly and easily accessible. But not everyone responds the same to synthetic hair. If you’ve experienced an allergic reaction to synthetic hair, try human hair instead. Human hair, while the most expensive option, is better quality and lighter. We all have our preferences, so go with what works best for you!
