Protective Summer Styles

Summa, summa, summatime!!!

*cues music* A black girl and her braids. A black girl and her braids. Can’t tell her nothing, please don’t touch it! A black girl and her braids!

Hey y’all! It’s your girl Daneen, back with another month of poppin' blogs. Child, it’s summa and it’s hot and humid and I’m just like “Where’s October?!” Well, we’ve got a while until then, so in the meantime let’s get into some summer styles. If you’re one of the ones that love a good twist out or a wash n go but humidity has other plans for you, you’re in the right place. This week we’re going to delve into feed-in cornrows and flat twist and why they need to be a part of your summer looks.

What are feed in cornrows you ask? Feed in cornrows are cornrows done with extension hair. With the feed-in technique, hair extensions are gradually woven into your natural hair to create a more natural-looking braid and a smoother hairline. The feed in technique also causes little to no tension on your hairline. Feed in cornrows come in so many shapes and sizes. They can done subtle or give a professional look for the office or can be fun and frisky for your next bae cation. Some examples for feed in cornrows are, Ghana cornrows , Fulani cornrows and stitch cornrows. (Look below for some examples) Cornrows are a great protective style for the summer months. You can work out with them and even swim. Swimming can shorten the longevity of the style but will definitely last through your vacation. If you’re planning a trip or just want a break with your loose hair I suggest you come and check out Kimberly at our White Oak Location. She’s up there showing off y’all

Next up we have one of my favorites! Feed in flat twist with extensions. Feed in flat twist are fine the same by feeding in the extension hair as you flat twist. The way the hair is fed in and the finishing look always makes me smile. I really just love how it looks just like your hair! Have you had your hair slayed by The Doc or Olympia? When I tell you they can do these with their eyes closed! Feed-ins can be done very simple or super intricate. They can be done in an up do or something low with a cute bun. They are great to work out in but I don’t suggest swimming with these.

At home care for these styles are simple. Get a good leave-in conditioner and an oil (we have a few on our online store and in both locations) every two to three days simply mist your hair with leave in and follow up with oil to your scalp. Be sure to cover with oil.

Both of these styles are fun and timeless! I know we will be wearing these for a lifetime. The evolution of natural hairstyles has always been so intriguing to me. Like who thought “hmmmm maybe I can start the cornrows with the clients hair and then add the hair as I go” and it actually worked and became an amazing trending style.

We hope to see you guys soon for your protective Summer look!
